Question: I am going through menopause and have had a partial hysterectomy. I am finding myself depressed. Can I do anything about this? I am not able to take estrogel as it makes me sick to my stomach. Thank you.

Answer:

CONTRARY to what “everyone seems to KNOW about menopause”, estrogen levels do not drop to zero. Humans all make hormones – including estrogen – throughout the body. Of course, the majority is made in the sex organs, but the skin is also part of the production process. I find that the widespread use of estrogen is based on a myth that had been propagated back in the 60s (paid for by the company that produced the products made from horse urine).

It is true that estrogen levels fall. What is often missed is that progesterone levels fall even more. We find that the key to healthy hormones is that they be balanced. There is a relationship between all of the hormones – and progesterone appears to be the critical factor. When progesterone is too low, all of the hormones can be out of balance. There are many causes of imbalance, but they are beyond the scope of this response.

We find that the majority of menopause symptoms are more closely associated with low progesterone than to low estrogen. Estrogen supplements can easily make matters worse – as you’ve discovered. Excess estrogen – or imbalanced estrogen – is directly associated with depression, forgetfulness, and foggy thinking.

Good progesterone creams are available without a prescription in many pharmacies and health food stores. Quality progesterone creams contain Progesterone, USP. Avoid any product that contains soy or wild yam extract. They might be used in industry to make progesterone but your body doesn’t have the ability to convert those substances to progesterone.

We recommend using a small amount of progesterone early in the month, increasing for a couple of weeks, then stopping for 3 to 5 days.  The cycling is important because it mimics the natural rise and fall of progesterone levels – and it allows for a time when the cells can be free from the extra hormone.  Using progesterone without a break seems to desensitize the cells to the effects of progesterone.

The progesterone we sell, for example, provides 20mg in each pump (about 70 doses per container). It is simple to use. Many women do very well applying 1 pump (20mg) once daily from day 13 to 26 of their cycle (or the 13th through 26th on the calendar).

If this is not sufficient, or menopause symptoms re-occur throughout the month, you can apply one pump (20mg) once daily on days 1 through 12; twice daily on days 13 through 26; then stop until day one. These days refer to regular period days. When regular periods have stopped these days refer to calendar.
